The floating sculpture consists of sections made from pieces of swimming pool noodle joined with esparto grass, combining materials from the contemporary and historic culture of Torrevieja. The weave-like structure was inspired by traditional esparto grass baskets seen at the Museo del Mar de Santa Pola (a fishing town about 35km North of Torrevieja).

In my choice of colour dispersal and the decision to make the sculpture fragmented rather than a single piece, relates to my research on multinational communities. It describes how they tend to be retain a degree of fragmentation and separation despite becoming more homogeneous and integrated with each other over time. Another deliberate feature is that like Torrevieja’s population, it moves and evolves over time as the element interact with each other, so no individual encounter of the sculpture will be the identical.
